Star Alliance and Amadeus are joining forces to improve the air traveler experience for their customers. The partnership will specifically improve the interoperability of the Star Alliance Biometrics and Amadeus Traveler ID programs, allowing customers enrolled in one to access the benefits of the other without needing to re-register their personal information.
Star Alliance Biometrics debuted in November, and is available to members of the Miles & More Frequent Flyer Program. It allows them to pass through various airport checkpoints with only a facial recognition scan. Traveler ID, meanwhile, is a data exchange solution that similarly links a digital ID to an online portal at select moments during travel.
Members of both programs are given control of their personal data, and can therefore choose when they want to share their biometric information with different stakeholders. The arrangement will allow Traveler ID holders to use that ID at any airports and with any airlines that support the Star Alliance Biometrics program.
According to Star Alliance, the partnership will encourage the adoption of digital identity solutions because it means that customers will not need to deal with the hassle of opening a new account every time they travel with a different airline. It will also allow airports to move away from shared touchpoints in response to COVID-19.
“This partnership increases our operational ability by speeding up airport processes and immediately benefits those who have already enrolled in our program,” said Star Alliance Customer Experience VP Christian Draeger.
“The Traveler ID solution is agnostic, meaning that all types of travel companies can work with us for a variety of digital identity needs,” added Amadeus Central and Eastern Europe EVP Monika Wiederhold. “Ultimately, our objective is to help the industry deploy frictionless travel throughout the whole passenger journey. We can only achieve this through collaboration with travel industry partners, which is why we are so pleased to work with Star Alliance.”
The Star Alliance Biometrics program leverages facial recognition technology from NEC. The two companies first announced their partnership in July of 2019.
