New Eurodac System Enters Operation With Facial Images and Expanded Data

The European Union’s overhauled Eurodac system has entered operation, adding facial images and a broader set of identity data to the bloc’s central database for asylum and irregular-migration records. eu-LISA, the EU agency that runs the system, brought the new Eurodac online together with the shared components that let it work across the EU’s other large-scale border and security databases.

The redesigned system widens what Eurodac can hold and match. Where the previous version worked from fingerprints alone, the new Eurodac processes both fingerprints and facial images, expands the identity and case data it can store, and broadens the circumstances under which records can be entered. Those changes are meant to let national authorities identify asylum seekers and irregular migrants more reliably as people move between member states.

Eurodac did not go live in isolation. It entered operation alongside the European Search Portal, the Common Identity Repository, and the shared Biometric Matching Service, the connective infrastructure of the EU’s interoperability framework that allows a single query to run across migration, border, and security systems. Folding Eurodac into that architecture is what turns it from a standalone fingerprint database into one node in a linked identity-matching layer.

“This is the result of close cooperation between eu-LISA, Member States, the European Commission and our partners,” said Tillmann Keber, Executive Director of eu-LISA, which built the system in-house using agile development methods. The agency framed the redesign around improved performance, scalability, and resilience for a system that underpins asylum procedures across the bloc.

The launch advances a long-running effort to connect Europe’s border and migration databases through biometrics. eu-LISA has been building out the shared Biometric Matching Service as the common engine for comparing fingerprints and facial images across systems, and member states have been moving to mandate Eurodac enrollment, as Ireland did when it signed an International Protection Bill requiring biometric enrollment for asylum seekers.

With the new Eurodac in operation, the EU has the facial-image and expanded-data capabilities live within the system that anchors its asylum and migration records.
