EU Launches Shared Biometric Matching System to Strengthen Border Security

The European Union has officially launched its shared Biometric Matching System (sBMS), marking a major step in the development of its border security infrastructure. The system was implemented for eu-LISA by IDEMIA Public Security and Sopra Steria, going live on May 20, 2025, with the vendors announcing a successful operational rollout on August 25, 2025. The sBMS is a central component of the EU’s Interoperability Roadmap for Justice and Home Affairs.

Central Role in Border Management

The sBMS serves as the EU’s central biometric database, designed to store and compare fingerprints and facial images across large-scale information systems used in border, migration, and security management. The launch comes ahead of the October 12, 2025 introduction of the Entry/Exit System (EES), which will bring digital border controls to all external Schengen borders through a phased rollout over six months, concluding by mid-April 2026.

Under the new framework, when third-country nationals enter Europe, their biometric data will be registered and checked against the sBMS database to verify identity and detect potential security risks. Authorities will be able to conduct identity checks quickly, enabling faster, more efficient border crossings for legitimate travelers while helping to prevent unauthorized entry.

Addressing Security Gaps and Enhancing Infrastructure

The launch of the sBMS follows earlier security audits that identified vulnerabilities in the Schengen Information System II (SIS II). Strengthening the EU’s border control technology has become a priority, and the sBMS is positioned as a critical tool in addressing those gaps. It is built to process very high volumes of biometric data in real time while complying with EU privacy and data protection regulations.

The system integrates with other large-scale IT platforms under the EU’s Interoperability Roadmap, improving data sharing and verification capabilities between different security and migration databases. This approach is intended to enhance operational efficiency for border authorities across the Schengen Area.

“This achievement marks an important milestone in the roll-out of the Interoperability Roadmap by the EU Agency responsible for the management of large-scale IT systems in the Justice and Home Affairs domain,” according to a joint press release from IDEMIA Public Security and Sopra Steria.

As the EES comes online and the EU continues to expand its border technology capabilities, the sBMS will remain a foundational element in the region’s border management strategy, supporting both security enforcement and streamlined travel experiences for visitors.
