New Car Cockpit System Combines Facial Recognition, Fatigue Monitoring

Cockpit electronics provider Visteon is showcasing new technologies for electric vehicles at the Electric Vehicle Symposium & Exhibition (EVS31) event in Japan this week, including biometric solutions for driver recognition.

Explaining that the emergence of electric vehicles presents an opportunity to introduce new electronic interfaces to the car cockpit, Visteon is presenting a number of new solutions, with a major component being infrared cameras equipped with facial recognition for driver identification. They also feature head- and gaze-tracking capabilities, allowing an autonomous vehicle to assess whether a driver is fit to drive or should relinquish control to the vehicle.

The technology reflects a growing trend that can already be seen in non-autonomous vehicles. One model of the latest Subaru Forester, for example, features a system called DriverFocus that uses biometrics to monitor the driver for signs of fatigue or exhaustion, activating driver assist systems if such signs are detected.

Visteon is showcasing its technology, along with other automotive cockpit solutions including advanced domain controllers, from booth 153 in Hall 1 of the Kobe Convention Center. EVS31 runs from October 1st to 3rd.
