New Biometric Smart Card Features T-Shape Sensor

Fingerprint Cards has provided the fingerprint sensors for a new biometric card from CardLab. The card combines FPC’s T-Shape fingerprint sensor model with TrustSec’s operating software.

According to FPC, the card has potential applications in multiple industries, and can be used for everything from payments to immunity credentials to access control. The CardLab offering enables secure passwordless authentication that meets the latest FIDO2 specifications, and can communicate with other devices via NFC or a Bluetooth connection. The new card also features a Secure Element from Infineon.

FPC has previously provided CardLab with T-Shape sensors for a biometric card project with Thai British Secure Printing. The company has spent much of the past year encouraging the use of biometric payment cards, arguing that the technology will allow financial institutions to raise the contactless payment cap and improve public health outcomes during the pandemic.

FPC has provided fingerprint sensors for numerous biometric card projects in recent months. M-Tech Innovations announced that it would feature the T-Shape module in a payment card designed for the Indian market in December, while another (unnamed) card manufacturer did the same at the beginning of the year. The company’s next-generation T2 module has also been cleared for use in China after receiving approval from the Bank Card Test Center.
