“… the Romanian Protection and Guard Service selected NEC as its partner based on its high-performing NeoFace facial recognition engine.”
NEC recently had a high-profile opportunity to provide biometric security for European Union members, the company has revealed. The Tokyo-based firm delivered a security system based on facial recognition at an informal EU Summit held in Sibiu, Romania, on May 9th.
The Summit was an important event in Romania’s tenure in the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, and officials were understandably eager to ensure a high level of security. They opted for a system based on the biometric recognition of registered officials, and the Romanian Protection and Guard Service selected NEC as its partner based on its high-performing NeoFace facial recognition engine.
EU officials’ facial biometrics were registered into a database of approved summit attendees, and the face-scanning camera systems were installed at the venue’s four gates. This biometric identity verification system was combined with a second authentication step based on the scanning of QR codes printed on guests’ invitations, allowing for a high level of security without a high level of friction for attendees.
“This was the first time that biometric certification was used as a security measure at an EU Summit, and participating high-level officials were authorized with high accuracy and speed, thereby contributing to a safe, secure and smooth conference,” NEC asserted in a statement announcing its involvement in the event.
NEC has seen growing interest in its NeoFace solution as government agencies increasingly look to biometric security and smart city solutions. And given the presence of so many government officials at any major EU event, the company may have attracted new prospective customers with its presence at the Romanian EU Summit.
