One of the biometrics industry’s biggest players has outlined the steps it is taking to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
In a new blog post, NEC Corporation of America CEO Mark Ikeno emphasized that the health of his firm’s customers, partners, employees, and their families is “of paramount importance,” and that the company’s response to the coronavirus pandemic is based on guidance from the US Center for Disease Control.
COVID-19 hasn’t had a “direct impact” on NEC’s operations, Ikeno said; but the company has nevertheless taken precautions including:
- The restriction of all business travel to what is deemed “mission-critical”.
- The implementation of voluntary remote working for employees.
- The reduction of on-site staff in NEC’s Bay Area offices to only those who are “business-critical”, as per California’s “Shelter in Place” order.
Further measures will be implemented as appropriate, and NEC’s chief executive noted that readers should feel free to get in touch with their NEC contacts if they have any questions or concerns.
NEC and its American subsidiary are among the biggest biometrics companies in the world, renowned in particular for their sophisticated facial recognition technology, their airport border screening deployments, and their work with high-profile government and police agencies, including INTERPOL. While NEC Corporation of America is clearly maintaining its business operations, the fact that such a large firm has been compelled to take strong measures to mitigate COVID-19 reflects the breadth of the pandemic’s reach and effects.
