NEC Corporation has won a contract, in partnership with Sumitomo Corporation, to provide communication systems and an automated fare collection system for the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) currently under development in the Philippines.
The NSCR project is being undertaken by the Philippine Department of Transportation with financing from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), while the contract itself was awarded by Hitachi Rail STS S.p.A. The aim is to build a 147km rail line extending from the city of Calamba north to New Clark City, ultimately helping to connecting the Metropolitan Manila area to neighboring sectors.
A statement announcing NEC’s contract win made no mention of plans to implement biometric technologies, but the company is well known for its NeoFace facial recognition solution, and authorities in the Philippines have increasingly looked to biometric tech for their security and digital transformation needs.
The The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, for example, announced the launch of a new communications and command center this month, which will be used to monitor more than 400 camera feeds; and in making the announcement, the MMDA indicated that it has plans to procure facial recognition and behavioral analytics technologies for the center in the future.
“In terms of Communication Systems, NEC will provide network infrastructure, radio systems, broadcasting systems for station buildings, and surveillance camera systems,” NEC explained in its contract win announcement. “With regard to the Automated Fare Collection System, NEC will provide a central system for fare settlement and ID management for transit smartcards, as well as station equipment that includes ticket gates and ticket vending machines.”
Authorities approved the North-South Commuter Railway’s initial development phase in 2015, and construction got underway in 2019. The entire project is currently expected to be completed in 2029.
