NEC Tech to Assist in CBP’s Border Screening Trial at JFK Airport

NEC’s facial matching technology is set to play an important role in the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency’s piloting of biometric border screening at the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City.

Unisys, which the CBP also contracted to provide technology for a similar project at Dulles International Airport, has integrated NEC’s NeoFace Match software into the overall biometric system being used in the JFK pilot. The software will complement other biometric technology from Vision-Box to enable the automatic comparison of travellers’ faces with the images depicted on their electronic passports.

It’s a project aimed primarily at improving border security, with the CBP proceeding cautiously in test projects of limited scope; NEC says its technology is currently only being used to assess travellers using the Visa Waiver Program for the first time, as well as returning US citizens who possess e-Passports. But as the technology is proven effective, the CBP may well expand its use in the near future.
