NEC to Provide Biometric eGates for Malaysia’s Borders

NEC Malaysia has won a sub-contract for the deployment of a biometric border control system in the country. The contract was awarded by IRIS Information Technology Systems (“IITS”), a subsidiary of IRIS Corporation Berhad and the main contractor in the project.

The border control project is part of Malaysia’s National Integrated Immigration System (“NIISe”), a government initiative launched by the Ministry of Home Affairs to help advance the Malaysian Immigration Department’s digital transformation. NEC Malaysia’s role will be to provide its Automated Biometric Identification System and its Border Control Solution eGates.

NEC says its eGates support face and iris recognition, and will be installed at all of Malaysia’s immigration checkpoints.

“As our technology partner, NEC has provided invaluable feedback and ideas during our initial discussions and helped identify potential pain points in modernising the immigration system,” commented IRIS Information Technology Systems CEO Shaiful Zahrin Bin Subhan. The executive also highlighted NEC’s “stellar track record” of global deployments; NEC says it has implemented more than a thousand systems featuring its fingerprint and facial recognition technologies across over 70 countries and regions.

For NEC Malaysia’s part, Managing Director Chong Kai Wooi emphasized that the project will improve the travel experience, enhance security and efficiency, and also generate “positive social-economic impacts” including the creation of job opportunities in the country. “Beyond developing solutions that propel Malaysia’s progress, we also work closely with our partners and stakeholders to support talent development in the digital space,” he said.
