NEC Developing Facial Recognition System for South Australia Police

NEC has been selected to provide South Australia Police (SAPOL) with a powerful new facial recognition system, the company has announced.

The system will be based on NEC’s NeoFace software, which the company says features the world’s fastest and most accurate facial recognition algorithm. NEC Australia’s R&D team is currently working with SAPOL to develop a system tailored to its needs, and in a statement announcing the contract NEC Australia COO Mike Barber highlighted the technology’s utility with respect to “its tolerance of poor quality images and surveillance video, which allows law enforcement authorities to use evidence previously considered of little or no value in order to achieve higher rates of identification.”

The company’s NeoFace Reveal system is already being used by Australia’s Northern Territory Police Force, which broadened its facial recognition program beyond a pilot phase last year. More recently, NEC Australia won a major contract to upgrade the country’s national police service’s National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS) by integrating facial recognition. Australian police agencies are evidently satisfied with what they’ve seen so far, and it appears that NEC has established a strong foothold in serving the domestic sector’s biometric needs.
