NEC’s facial recognition technology is being used to add security to the 23rd Summer Deaflympics, an IOC-sanctioned series of sporting events.
The deployment was designed in collaboration with domestic solutions partner MIA, with NEC’s facial recognition technology being used for access control purposes at 30 checkpoints. In a statement announcing the deployment, the companies explained that the technology is being used to scan the faces of event participants and ticket holders, with MIA Technology General Manager Ali Gokhan Belekin calling it “the fastest and most reliable ID and verification system of its kind.”
NEC has seen numerous high-profile deployments of its facial recognition technology in recent weeks. It’s being used to help secure a record-breaking observation deck in South Korea; by US border authorities as they trial biometric border control at airports; and by pedestrian-scanning police cruisers in South Wales.
This year’s Deaflympics are being held in Samsun, Turkey, having kicked off yesterday.
