NEC has been contracted to provide biometric technology for self-service kiosks to be trialed at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport.
The kiosks, starting their field pilot on January 31, 2024, will facilitate seamless immigration and customs procedures. By pre-registering necessary information and linking it with Immigration Services Agency and Japan Customs systems, these kiosks will ensure a smooth arrival process and reduce congestion. The kiosks are user-friendly, with automatic language display, easy-to-follow instructions, and support functions like animation and audio guidance.
The kiosks employ NEC’s advanced face recognition technology, NeoFace, and fingerprint identification technology for reliable identity verification. These technologies ensure quick and accurate identification, accommodating users of different heights and those with accessories like masks or sunglasses.
Participating travelers will need to register for the service online, and will then be given a QR code that can be presented and scanned in dedicated lanes at the airport. Travelers’ information will be linked to systems used by the Immigration Services Agency and Japan Customs, allowing for more seamless passenger verification.
The aim is to streamline the travel process at one of Japan’s busiest airports, with the Japanese government having set a target of welcoming some 60 million overseas visitors by 2030.
The kiosks will be installed in Haneda Airport Terminal 2, with the initial pilot expected to last two months. A formal launch could follow as soon as April, and Japan’s immigration and customs authorities say they plan to install more of NEC’s kiosks at other airports.
