NEC is celebrating a successful deployment of its facial recognition technology in Colombia, where it installed a security screening system at the Atanasio Girardot Stadium in Medellin.
It was initially deployed at the end of last year, in cooperation with Medellin mayor Federico Gutierrez for his ‘Safer Stadium Project’. Atanasio Girardot hosts two major football clubs, Independiente Medellin and Atletico Nacional, and as such can occasionally see some rowdy behavior, which the biometric security system is meant to ameliorate.
It’s based on the company’s NeoFace Watch platform, and uses 170 cameras positioned throughout the stadium to monitor who is in attendance, scanning for the faces of individuals known to have caused trouble at previous events. NEC says the system can also detect disruptive behavior and automatically send alerts to authorities in real time. As such it offers another example of how biometric technology can be used to improve public safety in a range of areas, from passenger processing at airports to football stadiums.
