NEC Biometric Matching System Produces Strong Results for LA County Police

A huge police agency is now using biometric identification technology from NEC Corporation of America.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) is the third-largest police agency in the country, with its Los Angeles County Regional Identification System (LACRIS) managing NEC’s Integra ID 5 Multimodal Identification Biometric Solution (MBIS) for the criminal identification needs of the LAPD and 45 other police departments in the county. The solution was fully implemented in early January, and NEC says that in the first seven days of its use, it matched 107 open cases with known offenders, including two cold case murders.

In a statement announcing the deployment, NEC asserted that LACRIS’s use of the Integra ID 5 MBIS “is one of the largest criminal biometric identification implementations in the world, interfacing to numerous state and federal databases, including California Department of Justice and the FBI’s Next Generation Identification system.” Commenting on the system’s effectiveness compared to LASD’s previous biometric matching system, LASD Lt. Derek Sabatini asserted, “The criminal identifications are processing back faster and more efficient, both in the jails and with mobile identifications.”

NEC’s solution supports fingerprint, facial, iris, and palm print matching, though the company says that not all of these modalities are in use in with LACRIS. In any case, it’s the latest indication of the growing use of biometric identification by police authorities in the US and around the world.
