South Korean tech giant Naver has implemented passkey login functionality across its services, joining a growing wave of major platforms adopting FIDO Alliance-backed passwordless authentication. The system enables users to authenticate using facial and fingerprint recognition rather than traditional passwords. The system has been rolled out initially for PC and mobile web platforms, with integration into the Naver mobile app scheduled for completion in the first half of 2024.
The passkey system allows users to log in within seconds by using biometric data stored on their previously registered devices. This implementation aligns with the FIDO Alliance’s specifications for secure credential exchange, enabling users to move their passkeys across different platforms and devices. The system eliminates common issues such as login failures due to password typos while removing the need for users to remember complex password combinations.
As part of the security infrastructure, Naver has implemented several protective measures, building upon South Korea’s robust approach to digital identity verification and authentication. These measures include a login blocking function that requires personal verification for overseas login attempts, notifications for logins from new devices or environments, and two-factor authentication requiring approval from a designated device.
The company has also maintained its Privacy Enhancement Reward (PER) system, which incentivizes users to report security vulnerabilities and suggest improvements in personal information protection. This initiative reflects growing concerns about data privacy in South Korea, where recent legislative proposals have called for stricter regulations on biometric data collection and usage. The program saw significant growth in 2023, with 268 reports received, representing a 31 percent increase from the previous year. The company issued 91 rewards, marking the highest number of rewards distributed and an 11 percent increase year-over-year.
