Nagpur Airport has introduced face-only entry at all of its DigiYatra-enabled gates, removing the boarding-pass scan previously required before facial verification. Passengers must still register in the DigiYatra app and link their boarding pass before using the upgraded process.
GMR Nagpur International Airport Limited says the single-step system authenticates an enrolled passenger’s face and opens the designated entry gate. Previously, travelers scanned a boarding pass at the gate and then underwent the facial check. The upgrade removes that separate scan at the terminal entrance, rather than removing the need to associate a flight with the app.
Passengers can continue using facial verification at DigiYatra-enabled checkpoints inside the terminal. Airport chief executive Srikanth Bhandarkar said the change is intended to improve convenience and speed, while the operator says it will reduce waiting and manual intervention.
DigiYatra connects a traveler’s digital identity with facial authentication for airport processing. The app-based enrollment and boarding-pass steps establish the information used for the subsequent face check.
Participation in the system is voluntary. The platform recently added driving licences as an alternative enrollment credential to Aadhaar. Licences are retrieved through DigiLocker, the government’s digital document wallet, with the user’s consent. Existing users can add a licence to their Digi Yatra Wallet and choose which supported credential serves as the primary record for matching their name with a boarding pass.
Digi Yatra Foundation says those licence credentials are encrypted and stored on the passenger’s device. When it introduced the licence option in August, the foundation put the platform’s footprint at 39 airports, with more than 25.5 million app downloads and over 105 million passenger journeys facilitated.
The service’s earlier expansion reached 15 million downloads in July 2025, when it operated at 24 airports. Its development has combined additional airport deployments with changes to the identity documents travelers can use in the app.
The Nagpur change concerns the sequence at the entry gate for passengers who have already completed registration and linked their boarding pass. Those travelers can approach a designated DigiYatra gate and proceed through facial authentication without presenting the boarding pass to a scanner first.
