Digi Yatra, India’s national facial biometric air travel system, has reached over 15 million app downloads as of July 2025, reflecting strong public uptake of digital identity tools in aviation. Launched in December 2022, the system has now facilitated more than 61 million passenger journeys across 24 airports, with about 30,000 new downloads reported daily.
The platform enables contactless passenger processing at airport checkpoints using facial authentication and Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) architecture. By linking a user’s digital identity to a verified facial scan, Digi Yatra eliminates the need for physical documents at key travel touchpoints. This expansion of paperless travel capabilities marks a milestone in India’s transition to a more seamless aviation experience.
National Growth and Future Integration
Digi Yatra Foundation CEO Suresh Khadakbhavi described the 15-million-user milestone as a sign of growing public confidence in secure digital travel. He also outlined the platform’s long-term ambition: “Our vision is to establish Digi Yatra as the ‘Travel Stack of India,’ offering a secure, private, and efficient identity verification system across both physical and digital gateways.”
The platform has recently expanded to major hubs such as Pune, and plans to add four new airports to its network in the coming months: Chandigarh, Thiruvananthapuram, Mangaluru, and Srinagar. Digi Yatra aims to cover 80 percent of Indian air travelers by 2028, according to government briefings. With a projected install base of 16.5 million by August 2025, adoption is accelerating quickly.
Positioning for Global Compatibility
Digi Yatra is preparing for international pilots and plans to integrate global identity standards, including IATA’s One ID framework. Upcoming upgrades will also include multilingual support, expanding to 22 Indian languages to increase accessibility for domestic travelers.
The system’s growth trajectory—from 9 million active users in late 2024 to 15 million by mid-2025—underscores increasing public acceptance of biometric technology in everyday travel. As facial recognition and digital identity systems reshape global air travel, Digi Yatra positions India as an early adopter in this space.
