The FIDO Alliance has seen a dramatically rising profile in the mobile sector in particular over the last few years. It’s the industry’s leading authentication standards body, and with security becoming increasingly top of mind with every data breach and social media hack, FIDO has been getting a lot of attention for its standards. So it’s only natural that the organization would show up at Mobile World Congress with some big news in tow.
And FIDO has delivered, arriving at MWC with the news that Android, Google’s massively popular operating system, is now FIDO2 Certified, attesting to its built-in support for strong user authentication and for letting users take advantage of biometrics and security keys to sign into online accounts through the most popular browsers. And on top of that, just ahead of MWC it was announced that Samsung’s big new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S10, features an in-display fingerprint sensor that is the first component to have successfully gone through the FIDO Alliance’s recently launched Biometric Component Certification Program.
Speaking with FindBiometrics’ Susan Stover on the MWC show floor, FIDO Chief Marketing Officer Andrew Shikiar highlighted both of these developments, and also delved into his organization’s plans to encourage deployments of FIDO authentication with tech companies and developers over the course of 2019.
