MOSIP and WSO2 Partner on eSignet Modernization for National Digital Identity Systems

WSO2 has announced a strategic collaboration with the International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore and the MOSIP project to advance open-source digital identity infrastructure, with eSignet modernization at the center of the partnership.

The collaboration focuses on enhancing eSignet, MOSIP’s open-source identity authentication and authorization module that enables citizens to securely share identity data with service providers through OpenID Connect protocols.

The collaboration builds on MOSIP technical specifications including recent QR code support for offline authentication scenarios where internet connectivity is limited or unavailable. The eSignet work complements other MOSIP ecosystem tools like Inji Certify for verifiable credential issuance.

Modernized eSignet supports active MOSIP implementations including Zambia’s healthcare integration efforts announced in January 2025, where government agencies received MOSIP training to connect health services to the national digital identity platform.

The partnership strengthens the MOSIP certification program ecosystem for system integrators and component vendors, which establishes interoperability standards for biometric hardware, software modules, and integration services used in national ID programs.

eSignet provides single sign-on capabilities for government digital services, allowing citizens to authenticate once and access multiple services without repeated identity verification. The module supports consent-based data sharing, enabling users to control which personal information is released to service providers.

WSO2 provides open-source middleware and API management platforms used by governments and enterprises for identity federation, API security, and integration architecture. The company’s technologies are deployed in digital government initiatives across multiple countries.

The collaboration aims to improve deployment readiness, interoperability, and scalability of eSignet for national digital identity programs considering or implementing MOSIP-based systems. Modernized eSignet impacts how countries build authentication layers for digital public infrastructure connecting identity systems to government services, financial inclusion programs, and healthcare platforms.
