Morpho (Safran) has entered into a new partnership with Elo, a Brazilian payment card brand that works with Banco do Brasil, Bradesco, and CAIXA, three of the country’s major banks. The agreement will see Morpho do Brasil manufacture smart card modules for the company.
Morpho has developed a custom smart card solution for Elo designed for use in credit, debit, and other banking applications. Morpho itself will load the smart card module chips with the necessary software at its Taubate, Sao Paulo production site, with the chip wafers being sent directly to Morpho for the production process, helping to ensure a high level of security.
It’s the first time a Brazilian card maker has chosen to have its smart cards manufactured domestically. In a statement, Morpho do Brasil VP Marcelo Bellini Garcia expressed the company’s pleasure over Elo’s choice of “Morpho’s leading smart card technology expertise to realize this special chip-based application, developed exclusively for their payment cards in Brazil.” Bellini added that the agreement “decisively reinforces our strong position in the Brazilian payment market and the entire South American market.”
There is good reason for Elo to be confident in Morpho’s production of the smart cards. The company, through its MorphoTrust division, was recently named a 2016 CSO50 Award honoree for the security of its driver license production in the US, having earlier received ISO 14298 certification for such facilities. The company is bound to extend this same care to its production in Brazil, especially given the sensitivity of smart payment card security.
