Morpho (Safran) is going to help lead a cross-sector coalition seeking to improve mobile security in Norway.
Initiated by the Research Council of Norway (RCN), the SWAN (Secure access control over Wide Area Network) Research & Development Project is designed to leverage biometric and encryption technologies to help reduce fraud and identity theft with respect to Norwegians’ smartphone use. Given its expertise in biometrics, Morpho will play a crucial role in the project, and will work with Gjovik University, Oslo University, IDIAP, ZWIPE, and the Association of German Banks to help push the project forward.
It’s a major initiative and is part of Morpho’s deep dive into mobile authentication, an area the company announced it would explore earlier this month. To that same end, the company has also just announced a major project in India that will see the biometric enrollment of mobile subscribers, as well as its acquisition of an mPayment startup.
In a statement announcing the SWAN Project, Morpho asserted that its goal is to develop a mobile access control platform in which every transaction uses end-to-end encryption, and also hinted that modalities used could include those based on fingerprint, face, and iris recognition.
