Morpho to Deliver Custom AFIS System to Zambia Police Service

Morpho (Safran) has won a new contract to provide the Zambia Police Service with one of its flagship biometric platforms, the MorphoBIS Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS).

The deal outlines a long-term, comprehensive effort. Morpho is going to deploy both mobile scanners and live capture enrolment stations at the headquarters of various provincial authorities in the country, and will also work with the ZPS to scan extant paper-based fingerprint images. Moreover, Morpho will offer training and maintenance services over a five-year period.

Speaking on the development in a press release, ZPS’s Inspector General of Police, Stella Libongani, explained that it was part of the Service’s overall modernization program. She asserted that ZPS investigators will be “empowered by the use of the latest technologies offered by the system”, and also that its “ability to decentralize the services to all regions in Zambia… will dramatically improve turnaround times.”

While MorphoBIS has recently seen some high-profile deployments in the US, Morpho’s highly sophisticated biometric technology has also seen many deployments around the world, with customized solutions also having been developed for police services in Botswana, South Africa, and Mozambique.
