FinComBank and Moldindconbank have become the first banks in Moldova to integrate the country’s EVO digital identity wallet, allowing customers to use documents stored on a phone for identity verification at bank branches.
The in-branch process begins when a customer scans a QR code displayed by the bank. The EVO wallet then shows which information the institution has requested, and the customer reviews and approves the transfer. The bank receives only the data needed for the transaction, and the wallet does not send information without the holder’s consent.
Moldova’s Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization described the integrations as the first private-sector use of the national digital identity infrastructure. State Secretary Michelle Iliev said the government wants to expand the wallet beyond its current set of roughly 20 integrated services and reach at least 200 services next year.
Bringing the wallet into bank branches gives the national infrastructure a practical role in financial-services identity checks. It can replace the manual presentation and copying of identity documents with a digitally signed exchange initiated by the customer. The QR-based workflow also gives the holder a chance to see the requested attributes before approving them.
The rollout reflects a wider shift toward credentials that can be verified and reused across institutions. The World Bank has proposed a portable digital payment identity credential that would let banks rely on trusted onboarding data without repeating the full process for every provider. Identity vendors are also combining biometric proofing with interoperable verifiable credentials for financial services.
The two bank integrations move EVO from a government-service wallet into a regulated private-sector setting. FinComBank and Moldindconbank can request verified identity information through the same national infrastructure, while customers retain control over each disclosure through the confirmation step on their phones.
