Mitek Systems has unveiled its Digital Fraud Defender, a cutting-edge technology designed to combat deepfakes and emerging digital frauds. The solution leverages AI algorithms to detect and prevent various forms of digital injection, template, and deepfake attacks.
The launch of Digital Fraud Defender comes at a pivotal time for Mitek, as the company recently appointed Edward H. West as its new Chief Executive Officer. West, who previously led Cardtronics plc through significant growth and a successful acquisition by NCR, is expected to drive innovation and expand Mitek’s market presence.
Digital Fraud Defender employs a multi-layered approach to detect injection attacks by monitoring digital content and analyzing data streams for signs of tampering or manipulation. The technology uses Virtual Camera presence detection, suspicious resolution detection, duplicate frame detection, and other methods to prevent digital injection attacks. This comprehensive approach reflects Mitek’s efforts to keep pace with the evolving identity verification and fraud landscape, a strategy bolstered by its acquisitions of biometric specialists ID R&D and HooYu.
The solution also detects signs of organized fraud ring attacks by monitoring for the rapid and repeated use of the same personally identifiable information (PII) and portraits. It compares faces to a known fraudster gallery, enabling fast identification of recurring scams and fraud attempts from known bad actors. Additionally, it alerts much faster to new AI template attacks.
Mitek’s deepfake fraud detection uses passive liveness detection technology that does not require active user participation or specific gestures to verify authenticity. This approach leverages AI algorithms to analyze subtle clues in video or audio data that indicate whether the content is real or manipulated.
Synthetic identity fraud is growing rapidly, fuelled by easy access to generative AI tools. Fraudsters combine real and fake data to create synthetic identities that can pass Know Your Customer (KYC) checks online and in person, leaving organizations vulnerable to long-term fraud risks. Mitek emphasizes the need for a holistic, layered approach to combat these evolving threats.
The company’s involvement in recent initiatives such as the California DMV Hackathon further highlights its commitment to advancing digital identity verification technologies.
