Cozumel will become the first ferry terminal in Mexico to implement facial recognition technology similar to that used in major ports across the United States and Europe.
The state government of Quintana Roo, through the Comprehensive Port Administration (APIQROO), has initiated several measures to enhance the safety of travelers, which include strengthening coordination with federal, state, and municipal authorities, as well as private service providers and the Navy.
Governor Mara Lezama, along with APIQROO’s General Director Vagner Elbiorn Vega, announced that the technological upgrades will include the installation of state-of-the-art surveillance equipment, such as security arches and closed-circuit television systems monitored around the clock. Additionally, the staff responsible for maintaining the smooth operation and security of the terminals will be increased.
The new cameras with facial recognitoin technology will place Cozumel at the forefront of port security in Mexico. Such systems have proven effective in various U.S. and European ports.
Currently, the San Miguel dock in Cozumel is equipped with metal detectors, X-ray machines, and military personnel for security. Governor Lezama did not specify when the new biometric cameras will be installed.
