Mauritius has officially launched its Mobil ID digital identity card, marking a major step in the nation’s digital transition. The Mobil ID, developed in collaboration with Thales and Harel Mallac Technologies, aligns with the country’s “Digital Mauritius 2030” strategy, which seeks to strengthen digital infrastructure, skills, and services.
The launch event, led by Minister Deepak Balgobin, emphasized the significance of this technological advancement.
“Mauritius stands out as the first African country to adopt a digital identity card that meets international ISO standards,” said Balgobin. “This technological advancement positions our country at the forefront, reinforcing our role as a leader in this new digital era.”
The Mobil ID allows citizens to manage personal information, such as updating their address or declaring a lost physical ID, and facilitates electronic document signing. It is integrated with a dual authentication system and offers robust protection against identity theft, ensuring user security. It also provides convenience for businesses and government agencies by streamlining processes and improving efficiency.
Digital Mauritius 2030 is a national strategy designed to transform Mauritius into a digitally-driven economy by 2030. It focuses on modernizing digital infrastructure, such as by expanding 5G networks, and enhancing public services through innovations like the Mobil ID. The initiative aims to make government services more efficient and accessible while ensuring strong data protection. Additionally, Digital Mauritius 2030 emphasizes developing digital skills across the population to foster innovation and support the country’s transition into a knowledge-based, tech-driven economy.
Minister Balgobin highlighted the government’s commitment to creating a secure, connected, and progressive digital ecosystem for Mauritius, ensuring the country remains a leader in digital innovation.
