Austroads and MATTR have partnered to deliver Digital Trust Service (DTS) capabilities, supporting various digital credentials in Australia, aiming to harmonize the digital credential landscape.
Austroads is an association of Australian and New Zealand transport agencies, focused on improving road transport and traffic management. It provides leadership in the delivery of an integrated, safe, and sustainable transport network.
The Austroads National Digital Trust Service will provide digital infrastructure to help Australian jurisdictions implement Mobile Drivers Licences (mDL). According to Austroads Chief Executive Dr. Geoff Allan, the DTS will allow for the secure verification of mDLs across Australia, irrespective of the issuing jurisdiction or location. The first stage involves a pre-production version of the DTS, powered by the MATTR VII platform.
“This is an exciting initiative, led by Austroads and enabled by MATTR, to increase convenience and confidence based on high assurance, high trust interactions,” said MATTR CEO Claire Barber.
The partnership will be showcased at the 10th International Interoperability Test Event (IVC24 Interop) in Sydney from October 3 to 5. Leading up to this, Austroads and MATTR will conduct webinars to provide overviews of mDLs and the DTS. The collaboration aims to demonstrate the value of the Austroads DTS in various digital credential use cases, with further project phases expanding DTS capabilities to support different trust services and credential types.
MATTR attained a solid foothold in Australia’s emerging digital ID ecosystem last year thanks to its involvement in a project in New South Wales, where MATTR was selected as the tech partner for the state’s Digital ID and Verifiable Credentials program. That project aimed to help residents prove their identity securely while limiting personal information sharing.
