Mastercard and Tencent MIDAS Expand Tokenized, Password-Free Payments

Mastercard and Tencent MIDAS have announced a global collaboration to integrate Mastercard Click to Pay and tokenization technologies into Tencent MIDAS’s overseas payment solutions. The announcement positions the initiative as a move toward faster, more secure, and password-free digital payments within the global digital entertainment ecosystem.

According to Mastercard, the collaboration will see Click to Pay functionality and advanced tokenization embedded into Tencent MIDAS’s international payment offerings. Tencent MIDAS provides payment services for digital entertainment developers and publishers, including games and other online content distributed outside China. The companies say the integration is intended to reduce checkout friction while strengthening security protections for end users and merchants.

Mastercard describes tokenization as a process that replaces sensitive card details, such as primary account numbers and static passwords, with secure tokens that are unusable outside a specific transaction or context. In the announced collaboration, tokenization is paired with on-device biometric authentication, shifting payment authorization away from reusable credentials toward device-bound verification methods. Mastercard states that this approach is designed to reduce fraud exposure and improve approval rates while maintaining a streamlined user experience.

The companies frame the initiative as part of Mastercard’s broader ambition to eliminate manual card entry and static passwords across the Asia Pacific region by 2030. Within this context, the Tencent MIDAS integration is presented as an extension of Mastercard’s existing Click to Pay strategy, tailored to the needs of global digital entertainment platforms and their users.

In the announcement, Tencent MIDAS executive Gang Li said the collaboration combines Tencent’s understanding of digital ecosystems with Mastercard’s global payment security expertise to support the development of what he described as a next-generation global commerce environment. Mastercard Asia Pacific president Sandeep Malhotra said the integration would enable faster and safer checkouts for users worldwide by bringing Mastercard’s security technologies into Tencent MIDAS’s global platform. Mastercard Greater China president Dennis Chang highlighted the company’s global network and local market experience as supporting Tencent MIDAS’s expansion into new regions.
