QIIB has partnered with Visa to launch Click to Pay with biometric authentication in Qatar, becoming one of the first banks in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region to introduce this advanced digital payment feature. The new service will eliminate the need for manual card entry and one-time passcodes, creating a faster and more seamless online shopping experience for QIIB Visa cardholders.
The Click to Pay system leverages Visa’s Payment Passkey Service, reflecting a growing trend of major payment networks adopting passwordless authentication. Instead of relying on passwords or codes, customers can authorize transactions using their device’s built-in biometric features, such as fingerprint scanning or facial recognition. The aim is to enhance security and simplify digital payments, reducing friction at checkout.
Tokenization Enhances Security
Security is a major focus of QIIB’s Click to Pay rollout. The platform uses tokenization technology, which replaces sensitive card details with unique encrypted digital tokens for each transaction. This approach minimizes the risk of card data theft and fraud during online purchases. Visa reports that tokenization now powers nearly 50 percent of its global digital transactions, highlighting how quickly this technology is becoming a standard in e-commerce.
To get started with Click to Pay, QIIB customers register by creating a unique identifier linked to their email address or phone number. Once enrolled through QIIB’s mobile banking app, users can make purchases with participating merchants without needing to re-enter their card details for each transaction. The service aims to deliver a balance of convenience and robust security for consumers making digital payments across a range of e-commerce platforms.
Biometric Payments Expanding Worldwide
This initiative by QIIB comes amid a broader industry shift toward biometric solutions in payments. Visa is already piloting Payment Passkey projects with issuers across Latin America and the Caribbean, signaling its global push toward biometric authentication. Financial institutions are responding to consumer demand for simpler, faster, and more secure digital transactions.
The introduction of biometric Click to Pay in Qatar places QIIB among the regional leaders advancing innovative payment technologies in the GCC. As biometric and tokenization technologies continue to spread, they are expected to shape the future of online commerce not only in Qatar but throughout global markets.
