Starting October 10, 2024, the Malaysian Road Transport Department (JPJ) will make it mandatory for users to log into its MyJPJ app using MyDigital ID, a single sign-on (SSO) system designed to enhance the security and ease of accessing digital government services.
The MyJPJ app allows users to view their road tax and driving license details digitally, especially after the government stopped requiring physical road tax stickers on vehicles. To avoid disruptions in accessing these services, JPJ urges users to register with MyDigital ID before the deadline.
JPJ’s implementation of MyDigital ID as the exclusive login method marks a significant shift in the country’s approach to identity verification for online government services. The app update notice emphasized that while the previous JPJeID login system will remain available for use on the public portal and kiosks, it will no longer be supported for mobile app logins. This makes JPJ the first Malaysian agency to fully adopt MyDigital ID for service access, although the Health Ministry has also introduced it as an option for the MySejahtera health app, albeit not as a mandatory login method.
Malaysia’s MyDigital ID has emerged as a pivotal element in the country’s digital transformation strategy, initially announced by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in November 2023. The initiative is part of the Malaysia Digital Economy Blueprint (MyDIGITAL), which aims to streamline access to government services and online transactions through a secure national identity management system.
Designed to use biometric data, including facial recognition, MyDigital ID ensures compliance with the Personal Data Protection Act while generating unique digital ID tokens stored on users’ devices, enhancing security.
The implementation of MyDigital ID has been structured in a phased rollout plan targeting specific groups: starting with Cabinet members, followed by civil servants, government benefit recipients, and eventually the general public. With an initial funding of RM80 million allocated to MIMOS Berhad, the project has garnered significant governmental support.
In August of this year, MyDigital ID became accessible via smartphones, allowing citizens to register conveniently through an app. The initiative has also extended its reach into the financial sector, with workshops conducted in collaboration with Bank Negara Malaysia to facilitate integration with banking services.
