M-Tech Biometric Payment Card Receives Visa Certification

Pune-based M-Tech Innovations has achieved a significant milestone in the Indian fintech space, becoming the first domestic manufacturer to receive full Visa certification for a biometric payment card. The card features a fingerprint sensor developed by Sweden’s Fingerprint Cards (FPC) and utilizes a secure element chip from Infineon.

The certification is the final green light required for mass commercial issuance in India. The cards are designed to address the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) push for stronger Second-Factor Authentication (2FA). Unlike standard contactless cards which often have low transaction caps to prevent fraud, biometric cards allow users to authenticate high-value tap transactions by holding their thumb on the embedded sensor, effectively replacing the PIN code.

“This supports the “Make in India” initiative and brings cutting-edge security to the everyday consumer,” stated M-Tech management. The company expects to begin Proof-of-Concept (PoC) pilots with major Indian banks in early 2026, aiming to capture a slice of the world’s fastest-growing digital payments market.

“We are proud to partner with M-Tech in bringing India’s first VISA-certified biometric payment card to life,” said Adam Philpott, CEO of Fingerprint Cards. “This achievement demonstrates the strength and adaptability of our biometric solutions, as well as our commitment to enabling secure, convenient, and inclusive digital payment experiences around the world. India is one of the fastest-growing and most dynamic markets globally, and this partnership opens exciting opportunities for future growth.”

The RBI’s 2FA requirement takes effect in April 2026, and M-Tech plans to ramp up engagement with banks and fintech partners for proof-of-concept projects in early 2026, with full commercial rollouts expected later in the year. The development comes as biometric payment cards gain momentum globally, with India’s massive market representing a particularly attractive opportunity given consumers’ familiarity with biometric authentication through Aadhaar.
