India Expands Aadhaar Face Authentication Access to Private Sector Apps

The Indian government has announced a significant expansion of Aadhaar authentication capabilities, allowing private entities to integrate face authentication features into their mobile applications. The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) has launched the Aadhaar Good Governance portal to facilitate this integration, providing detailed standard operating procedures for entities seeking authentication capabilities. This expansion follows earlier policy changes that began opening Aadhaar authentication to the private sector.

MeitY Secretary S Krishnan emphasized the platform’s role in advancing digital governance: “With the launch of this platform and continuous improvement of other processes and systems around it, we hope to expedite the process of adding more use cases in the domain of good governance and ease of living.”

The initiative builds upon the Aadhaar Authentication for Good Governance Amendment Rules, 2025, notified on January 31, 2025. These rules enable both government and private entities to use Aadhaar authentication for various public interest services, representing a significant evolution from earlier government-only implementations.

The integration scope spans multiple sectors, including hospitality, healthcare, credit rating bureaus, e-commerce, educational institutions, and aggregator service providers. Private entities can implement this authentication for customer onboarding, e-KYC verification, staff attendance, and exam registrations.

Implementation will be facilitated through the newly launched online platform (swik.meity.gov.in), which provides comprehensive guidance for authentication requests. Face-based authentication technology for Aadhaar has matured since its initial development in 2022.

The expansion addresses previous legal constraints established by the Supreme Court in September 2018, which had limited private sector access to Aadhaar authentication. However, privacy concerns remain a significant consideration, particularly given historical discussions around data security.

The portal’s launch ceremony was attended by key government officials, including UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar, NIC Director General Inder Pal Singh Sethi, UIDAI DDG Manish Bhardwaj, and other senior representatives from MeitY, UIDAI, and NIC.
