UIDAI Lets Indian Citizens Update Aadhaar Profile with Only an Aadhaar Card

Aadhaar is rapidly eclipsing other forms of identity in India. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) took to Twitter to announce that Aadhaar cardholders no longer need any other documents when updating some of their personal information.

Instead, Indian citizens can simply bring their Aadhaar card to any Aadhaar Seva Kendra center, where they will then be able to change their mobile number, their gender designation, or their email address. Cardholders will also be able to get a new photograph and update their biometric information, including their fingerprint and iris biometrics.

A separate document is still required for a change of name, address, or date of birth.

The news suggests that last year’s Supreme Court decision has not slowed the expansion of the national identity program. The Indian government has spent much of the past year drafting new Aadhaar legislation, with a particular focus on a private sector that began searching for Aadhaar alternatives in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling. Indian legislators created an opt-out policy for citizens, although the government can still require Aadhaar for the distribution of public goods and services.
