Luxand, Inc. is celebrating the latest success of its FaceSDK in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Face Recognition Vendor Test (FRVT).
In the Visa-Border Combination test, FaceSDK placed “in the top 21.8 percent”, as the company put it in an announcement, highlighting its performance in scenarios where controlled visa photos are matched with less ideal border-crossing images. This test involves significant challenges such as lighting variations and head poses with a Yaw of 45 degrees, and is designed to simulate real-world border security conditions.
The Visa-Border Combination test is relevant due to its reflection of practical face recognition challenges. Visa images are typically captured under controlled circumstances, while border-crossing images can vary widely in quality and angle. FaceSDK’s performance in this setting demonstrates its capacity to handle these discrepancies and suggests potential applications in areas where image quality is variable.
Luxand has also announced version 8.2 of FaceSDK, which includes an iBeta Certified Liveness Add-on for passive liveness detection on platforms like Android, iOS, Windows, and Linux. The feature aims to enhance security by addressing potential spoofing attempts. The latest release also offers improved stability for applications using React Native, Flutter, and .NET, alongside updated Python wrapper documentation, thereby broadening its usability across development environments.
Founded in 2005, Luxand initially focused on developing software for facial recognition and digital image processing. Over the years, it has evolved to become a significant player in biometric technology, offering a range of products centered around face detection, recognition, and related applications.
In addition to FaceSDK, Luxand offers tools for emotion recognition, avatar generation, and facial feature tracking, allowing companies to incorporate a range of AI-driven features into their applications.
The company has a niche but solid market position. It competes with other major vendors, including NEC, IDEMIA, and Cognitec, which have more extensive government contracts and broader market penetration, but seeks to distinguish itself by focusing on accessibility for developers and scalability across various sectors, from small apps to enterprise-level systems.
Luxand launched a face-based biometric attendance system earlier this year, aiming it at various application areas including workplaces, schools, and even fitness centers.
