Milan’s Linate Airport has officially launched the FaceBoarding system, allowing passengers to opt-in to use facial recognition for security checks and boarding.
FaceBoarding aims to optimize the passenger experience by streamlining identity verification and reducing queuing times. The initiative follows a successful trial period and is the result of a collaboration between technology providers, the Società Esercizi Aeroportuali (SEA) — the organization that manages the Milan Malpensa and Milan Linate airports in Italy – and regulatory bodies such as Enac (Italy’s civil aviation authority).
Both Ita Airways and SAS have already integrated their systems with FaceBoarding. Passengers can register voluntarily for the service at kiosks within the airport or via a mobile app launching in June. The biometric system enhances security and efficiency, eliminating the need to present physical documents at designated checkpoints.
“With biometrics we are making an investment that aims to increasingly improve the passenger experience at our airport,” said SEA CEO, Armando Brunini. “Our passengers are rightly among the most demanding.”
Officials highlighted data privacy as a key consideration, assuring that passengers’ face images are transformed into encrypted codes and subsequently deleted. Milan’s mayor, Giuseppe Sala, personally tested the system and endorsed its emphasis on both efficiency and privacy protection.
“For the Milanese, time is almost an obsession, we want to save time…one knows that there are often lines and queues once one arrives at the airport, ” said Sala. ” [FaceBoard] is an excellent innovation, and also with respect to privacy everything is done well. Our images are destroyed and transformed into encrypted codes that allow us to access the airport.”
