NEXT Biometrics has a new client that will open the door to further extending its presence in the notebook computer space.
The fingerprint sensor specialist has not named the client in question, but indicated that it is a major electronics company based in Asia with a strong presence in the B2B market.
The client has decided to go with a dual source strategy with respect to the biometric sensor components of its products. This means that NEXT now has the opportunity to distinguish itself agains the incumbent fingerprint sensor supplier with its active thermal fingerprint technology.
In a statement, NEXT explained that the client in question is “a worldwide leader” in developing various electronic devices including consumer electronics and business notebooks, and said that NEXT has already received initial purchase orders for its standard PC fingerprint sensors from the new client, which is aiming to integrate the sensors into a new notebook product.
NEXT expressed confidence about its prospects in its announcement. While the company asserted that the client’s market segment is “known for its long design-in lead times,” it is also known for “long-lasting agreements;” and NEXT asserted that its leadership expect to reach higher volumes with the new client in nine to 12 months.
“The design-win demonstrates that our active thermal fingerprint technology is competitive, and that we have once again been selected due to our great form factor, high security level and demonstrated customer focus in the notebook segment,” said NEXT Biometrics CEO Peter Heuman.
The news arrives after NEXT Biometrics announced that it had received its first purchase order from a separate, multi-year contract earlier this month. The agreement is with an as-yet-unnamed Europe-based company that Heuman described as “a dominant biometric player,” and the order was valued at NOK 5.5 million.
As for this newest client, NEXT Biometrics did not disclose the value of the initial purchase order for its PC fingerprint sensors.
