Lawrence County, SD, Embraces PortalGuard Security

BIO-key’s PortalGuard Identity and Access Management solution continues to pick up steam in the public sector. The company has revealed that South Dakota’s Lawrence County has decided to turn to PortalGuard for employee authentication, becoming the third county to make the switch in the first few weeks of 2022. New York’s Herkimer County and Missouri’s Audrain County both adopted PortalGuard earlier in the month.

According to BIO-key, Lawrence County administrators were particularly interested in PortalGuard’s WEB-key biometric authentication features. The County is planning to use WEB-key as its primary authentication factor for people logging into Microsoft Windows workstations. In doing so, they will ensure that employees do not need to use their own personal smartphones to access important work materials.

PortalGuard is also expected to help Lawrence County consolidate its identity procedures. The platform offers Single Sign-On capabilities that will allow employees to access multiple applications with only a single login, streamlining access control for employees and the IT department alike. The County is transitioning to PortalGuard in an effort to move toward zero trust security principles, and noted that the platform is compliant with its insurance and cybersecurity requirements as a public institution.

BIO-key showcased PortalGuard at the National Association of Counties Conference in July. Its early success in 2022 suggests that the show went well for the company. PortalGuard now offers support for 17 authentication factors, including biometric authentication factors, to enable secure multi-factor logins for people using the platform.
