Precise Biometrics is anticipating the commercialization of biometric smart cards in the wake of a Vendor Letter of Approval from Mastercard. The letter specifically concerns a new payment card from the South Korean smart card manufacturer KONA I, which features Precise’s BioMatch Card fingerprint technology.
In terms of content, the letter states that the card meets all of Mastercard’s various regulatory requirements, and complies with the CAST, CQM, CSI, and IAT standards. It also attests to the quality of Precise’s fingerprint solution, insofar as it indicates that the card fulfills certain security and performance expectations for biometric technologies.
The KONA I card itself comes with a built-in fingerprint sensor, and is compatible with IC chip payment terminals. As a result, it will allow shoppers to make contactless payments without needing to enter a PIN code or leaving a signature.
“We are happy that our fingerprint technology is integrated in the payment card now receiving Mastercard approval, an important step forward for bringing user-friendly payment cards with biometric authentication on the market,” said Precise CEO Stefan Persson.
Previous KONA I smart cards have featured fingerprint sensors from FPC. The new Precise-powered card is one of a growing number of biometric payment cards that is now moving toward commercialization. In that regard, Goldpac recently received a second letter of approval from China UnionPay with a card that includes a fingerprint sensor from IDEX Biometrics.
Precise’s BioMatch Mobile algorithm, meanwhile, has been integrated into a pair of new ultrasonic fingerprint sensors from Qualcomm. Both sensors are geared toward the next generation of mobile devices.
