Professional staffing and solutions firm Kforce has selected 1Kosmos to verify the identity of consultants before they start client assignments, to help prevent candidate fraud. Kforce places about 17,000 consultants a year.
Kforce began seeing more candidate fraud in 2024, including cases where the person who reported for an assignment was not the person the recruiter and client had interviewed. Some substitutions came to light only weeks later, when a client raised concerns. The company has more than 8,000 consultants on assignment at any given time.
Kforce already had internal fraud controls and teams to investigate warning signs, but handoffs among recruiters, account managers and client interviewers left a gap in confirming that the person placed was the person hired. It added 1Kosmos as an independent verification step within its existing compliance process, so identity is checked before a placement begins.
“We put together some stringent processes and internal technology, but we were missing independent ID verification,” said Matthew Nelson, senior director of program management at Kforce. “1Kosmos provides assured identity that the person we interviewed and onboarded is the same person that shows up at our client’s location.”
Every Kforce hire now completes a mobile identity check, wherever the hire is located. The 1Kosmos platform, which the company also offers for remote onboarding through Microsoft Entra Verified ID, validates a government-issued ID, captures a live facial image and checks that the person completing verification matches the document. Liveness detection is designed to flag attempts to use a photo, video or deepfake in place of a live person.
Each check creates a record Kforce can review, while role-based access limits who can see sensitive information. Kforce went live with the system in less than six weeks without a large-scale integration, and a mismatch can now be investigated before a consultant is given access to client systems.
“A recruiter and client can complete an interview and still have a different person arrive on day one,” said Mike Engle, chief strategy officer of 1Kosmos. He said the system lets Kforce verify that the person starting work is the individual who was hired, while giving its teams a record to review if a client raises a concern.
