The Kerala State Secretariat has completed the full implementation of a biometric attendance system, marking a significant shift away from traditional attendance registers. The move aims to enhance efficiency and transparency in administrative processes.
Linked to the SPARK payroll and HR management system, the biometric attendance system replaces the manual attendance registers that were previously used, as part of a broader effort to automate and streamline administrative tasks. The implementation aligns with a wider trend in India, where biometric systems are increasingly adopted to improve institutional accountability and efficiency. For instance, India’s higher education department has mandated similar systems for university staff to address punctuality and attendance issues.
The biometric system is expected to bring several benefits, including reduced manual errors and increased accuracy in attendance records. It also aims to improve the overall efficiency of the Secretariat by automating the process of tracking employee attendance.
Kerala’s eOffice portal, first launched in 2014, has been instrumental in automating various administrative tasks, including file processing and issuing orders. The biometric attendance system is another step in this direction, aiming to further enhance the efficiency of the Secretariat. The eOffice portal also provides citizens with information regarding file status and search view facilities for published government orders, ensuring that the biometric system is part of a comprehensive digital transformation initiative.
