KanKan Places Face Recognition Surveillance System in Chinese School

Remark Holdings subsidiary KanKan AI has outfitted the Hangzhou Primary School System with a Smart Campus Solution with facial recognition capabilities. The surveillance platform was built to meet the 2019 Work Focus Mandate from the Chinese Ministry of Education, a piece of legislation that seeks to improve school security and student performance with AI technology.

To that end, the KanKan solution uses facial recognition cameras to monitor attendance and verify the identities of everyone entering and exiting school buildings. The cameras can be used for access control at restricted areas like dormitories and labs, and will notify administrators about the presence of any unauthorized individuals.

The system is compatible with the DingTalk and WeChat apps, and will allow parents and teachers to receive alerts and view real-time footage of their children in the classroom. It will also make sure that children are only sent home with approved individuals.

“We are pleased with the initial success of our AI solution for school administration and campus safety, and that it has helped the primary school in Hangzhou to comply with the China Education Ministry’s mandate,” said Remark CEO Kai-Shing Tao.

Hangzhou is the first deployment of the Smart Campus Solution, which comes with an $8,000 per campus price tag. The platform can watch for weapons and other dangerous objects in addition to suspicious people.

KanKan’s tech was deployed to authenticate taxi drivers in the city of Xi’an earlier this summer. The school expansion serves as yet another example of China’s enthusiasm for facial recognition technology, which is increasingly becoming an fact of everyday life in venues across the country.
