Dott is planning to use Jumio’s face and document recognition technology to verify the identities and ages of customers riding its scooters. The Amsterdam-based e-scooter startup is now testing the age verification feature for riders in Lyon, and plans to expand the service to cover the rest of its network if the trial goes well.
The trial itself began on October 26. Jumio’s identity verification technology has been integrated directly into the Dott app, allowing riders to prove that they are over 18 with a selfie and a photo of an official government ID. The Jumio solution compares the selfie to the image on the ID to make sure that they are a match, with liveness detection to prevent various forms of spoofing.
In the past, Dott has relied on the honor system, asking riders to self-report their own ages when signing up for the mobility service. Jumio’s technology will dramatically improve the accuracy of Dott’s Know Your Customer procedures, and do so in a way that is compliant with the latest GDPR data privacy regulations. It should also reduce the company’s liability, since riders under the age of 18 are not covered by Dott’s automatic comprehensive insurance.
“This trial is part of a comprehensive prevention and safety policy so that traveling on a scooter remains a pleasure in a peaceful city,” said Dott CEO Henri Moissinac.
Dott currently has scooters in 14 cities in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, and Poland, and recently won a contract that will allow the company to expand to Paris. Jumio, meanwhile, is coming off the best sales quarter in company history, and is now looking to provide its customers with end-to-end KYC capabilities after completing its acquisition of Beam Solutions.
The company has also advocated for the use of representative datasets to reduce the amount of bias in AI technologies.
