JENETRIC Coats Fingerprint Sensors with Antimicrobial Material

JENETRIC is hoping to alleviate the public health concerns of people using its fingerprint scanners during the COVID-19 pandemic. To that end, the company has announced that all of its LIVETOUCH products are now available with an antimicrobial coating that is intended to reduce the risk of disease transmission when using shared devices.

The antimicrobial coating is made out of copper, with copper II oxide (also known as cupric oxide) serving as the actual antimicrobial component. The latest European Biocide Directive lists copper II oxide as an official biocidal active substance. The transparent coating is applied to the surface of JENETRIC’s scanners through a vaporization process. That coating is resistant to both chemicals and abrasion.

“With the antimicrobial coating of our fingerprint scanners, we have succeeded in offering permanent infection protection that goes beyond regular disinfection,” said JENETRIC CEO Roberto Wolfer. “The antimicrobial coating is much more efficient as it does not require supplies or downtime of the scanner during disinfection. In addition, the coating does not affect the fingerprint quality in any way.”

According to JENETRIC, the antimicrobial coating should supplement other public safety measures like hand washing. Many organizations abandoned fingerprint scanners during the pandemic, while those that continued using them adopted rigorous sanitation procedures.

The JENETRIC portfolio includes the LIVETOUCH Flipcase and the LIVETOUCH QUATTRO. The latter device is currently being used to administer the European Entry and Exit system at the German border.
