Japanese Bank Begins Deployment of Biometric ATMs Featuring NEC Tech

Tokyo-based customers of Japan’s Seven Bank will soon have sophisticated new ATMs at their disposal, thanks to technology from NEC.

The bank first revealed its plans for face-scanning ATMs at the start of the year, with the aim of enabling biometric customer authentication, and even letting users open new accounts through an ATM thanks to an additional document-reading capability. Now, Seven Bank has revealed that it has been working with facial recognition specialist NEC to develop these new ATMs, and that it will begin to replace current ATMs with the new models starting this month.

The ATMs sport numerous other technologically sophisticated features beyond facial recognition. They’re also designed to enable QR code reading and feature Bluetooth functionality for pairing with smartphones; and they even feature built-in seismometers to help authorities collect data on natural disasters.

The key feature, though, is facial recognition, and NEC would appear to be the natural choice for Seven Bank’s partner in this area. Based in Japan, NEC has established itself as a leading provider of facial recognition technology on a global level, and its NeoFace solution will be used extensively in next summer’s 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

On that note, Seven Bank says that it plans to complete its replacement of ATMs in Tokyo by next summer, with the aim of replacing the rest of its ATMs with biometric models by the 2024 fiscal year. Accounting opening services through next-generation ATMs, meanwhile, are slated to go live starting in October of this year.
