ITL Solution Brings Face Biometrics to Kiosk Machines Via USB

Cash-handling solutions provider Innovative Technologies (ITL) has announced the launch of its latest biometric solution, the ICU Lite USB device, enabling the addition of biometric authentication capabilities to existing terminals, kiosks, self-checkouts, and gaming machines.

The ICU Lite combines biometric technology with artificial intelligence algorithms to allow customers to add age verification and biometric facial recognition-based authentication methods to their existing stock of devices.

“We are delighted to bring this product to market after a period of intense product development to create a compact biometric solution,” said ICU Product Manager Dr. Andrew Brian. “Our ICU Intelligent Identification technology has been developed over a number of years and our ultimate goal was always to be able to offer high quality biometric measurements in a low cost, easy to use solution,” he added.

The ICU Lite can be integrated into its host machine by connecting a camera to the Lite and plugging it directly into the machine’s USB port. Dr. Brian notes that all of the processing of the biometric data captured by the ICU Lite is done locally on the device itself, meaning no additional processing power is needed for the host machines and data is safer as it never leaves the premises.

The biometric functions of the ICU Lite include age verification, facial recognition — including the ability to detect face coverings, a feature of growing importance in light of the increase in mask-wearing due to the COVID-19 pandemic — and gender identification, with each device able to be customized with up to two of these capabilities, depending on the specific needs of the customer.

“Installed at machine-level, [the ICU Lite] can be utilized in a variety of terminals such as kiosk, self-checkout, gaming machines, vehicles or cash safes – anything with restricted access,” commented ITL Senior Business Development Manager Christian Czeskleba. “It protects children from accessing age restricted goods or services, staff from intimidation or abuse, identifies premium or excluded customers and allows authorized staff access to machinery, vehicles or even safes.”
