“The solution arrives at a time when iris-based authentication is increasingly popular on mobile devices, thanks in large part to Samsung’s latest smartphones…”
IriTech has developed an iris scanning camera designed for PCs and laptops.
Called IriVault, the solution is available for integration directly into a product as an embedded module, or as a standalone device that can be connected to a computer. IriTech’s aim appears to be to popularize iris-based authentication on Windows through Microsoft’s Windows Hello security platform; in a statement announcing the solution, the company said the solution enables iris-based identification that “can be done automatically as a background Windows service when the pre-registered user is present in front of the PC.”
The solution arrives at a time when iris-based authentication is increasingly popular on mobile devices, thanks in large part to Samsung’s latest smartphones; meanwhile, a growing number of products are taking advantage of Microsoft’s support for biometric security in its Windows 10 operating system. With fingerprint authentication now expanding from the mobile sector, where it’s now widespread, to PCs and laptops, there is clearly an opportunity for iris scanning to follow a similar trajectory.
IriTech’s IriVault could end up being a key facilitator of that journey. The company says it will showcase the solution at next month’s MWC Americas event in San Francisco.
