“The eyeDisk is able to scan a user’s eyes from a distance of 15cm to 25cm, and can authenticate in less than a second, the company says.”
A Hong Kong-based startup is officially developing a USB flash drive that uses iris recognition to secure access.
Called eye-Disk, the company had created a Kickstarter campaign for its nearly eponymous solution, the eyeDisk; and the campaign has just surpassed its fundraising goal, nearly a month ahead of schedule. The eyeDisk is able to scan a user’s eyes from a distance of 15cm to 25cm, and can authenticate in less than a second, the company says. It’s also highly accurate, with a False Acceptance Rate under 0.0001 percent and a False Rejection Rate under 0.1 percent.
eye-Disk says its solution uses AES-256 encryption, and that its iris scanning technology meets the IEC-62471 standard for eye safety. Users register on the device, and that’s where their biometric data stays, helping to ensure that it can’t be compromised.
It’s another example of the growing prevalence of biometric security in consumer tech, with its early success on Kickstarter indicative of the growing market demand for this kind of technology.
eye-Disk estimates that it will start shipping its eyeDisk units in March of next year.
