Qatar’s Hamad International Airport is offering automated biometric passenger screening to Qatari residents, and Iris ID technology provides the system’s biometric backbone.
The system is, of course, based on iris recognition, with passengers required to place their passports on a document reader at an initial screening gate, and to undergo iris scans at a final portal. In a statement announcing its participation in the program, Iris ID said the whole process can take only ten seconds, and that over 865,000 passengers have already been scanned at the end of the first quarter of this year.
The system has won praise from Iris ID’s partners, with Qatar Airport Passport Department Director Col. Mohammed Rashid Al Mazrouei telling MOI News that it allows passengers to “save time and avoid long queues” while meeting “all required security standards.” Al Mazrouei added that he expects the automated eGates to be used over 3.5 million times this year, and that officials plan to nearly double the number of eGates in operation.
Iris ID technology is also being used to help streamline passenger screening at the US-Canada border through the NEXUS program, and has seen other applications in Aadhaar, India’s pioneering national biometric ID program.
