“The program is aimed at developing technological solutions to streamline cross-border travel, with iProov’s system designed to let travelers confirm their identities using their mobile devices.”
Biometric authentication specialist iProov appears to be on track to potentially playing an important role in US border screening, advancing to the fourth phase of a Department of Homeland Security pilot program.
The program is aimed at developing technological solutions to streamline cross-border travel, with iProov’s system designed to let travelers confirm their identities using their mobile devices. It’s a selfie-based authentication solution, with iProov’s Flashmark technology playing an important role in liveness detection and protecting against spoofing attempts.
The DHS Science and Technology Directorate is running the development program through Silicon Valley Innovation Program (SVIP), which revolves around public-private partnerships for the development of homeland security solutions. iProov’s solution has successfully passed through the first three phases of the SVIP program, and will now move onto a fourth phase in which its solution is tested in what the DHS describes as a “full-scale CBP operational environment,” referring to its Customs and Border Protection agency.
The London-based iProov has been awarded $198,407 in funding for its participating in phase four of SVIP.
Commenting on the development, SVIP technical director Anil John emphasized the importance of liveness detection, and the unique conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“A critical challenge when delivering digital services that require some manner of identity verification is the need to ensure that the entity being verified is a real live human and not a replica or a recording,” he said. “The pandemic has accelerated the need for high-value remote digital service delivery, and iProov has now adapted its technology to provide their anti-spoofing solution to a broad range of applications.”
